From Reject to Role Model: How Tim Burton's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' Shattered Gender Norms and Redefined Being Different in the Most Unexpected Way!

As a little kid, I had a reputation for being a tomboy. I liked monster movies and  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I only would wear skirts for special occasions. I was thus shunned by the girls for this ungirlish inclination; and shunned too by the boys due to my inevitably remaining a girl .  This isn't to say I didn't also like the pretty princess stuff. But, for all Belle in Beauty and the Beast griped about not fitting in, she really didn't seem to have actual issues with being rejected or outcast by anyone -- the bookstore guy loved her so much he gave her free books and the most popular guy in town still wanted to marry her even though she couldn't stand him. I admired and idolized the princess characters, as they're so carefully crafted to make you want to do; but there was always something about their hopes and experiences that didn't really fit with my reality and worldview. They were always perfectly girly and perfectly liked by all "good...

The Mulan Drinking Game

Okay... so a drinking game to a Disney movie is arguably not very Goth. Let's just point out that Disney hosts Bats Day and that you can drink this while sipping some suitably spooky beverage. Mulan is one of the final movies of the Disney Renaissance . It is based on an old Chinese poem about a woman who went into the military in place of her old father and little brothers. The movie is of course Disnified and has weird elements like a talking dragon voice by Eddie Murphy thrown in to be more 'hip.' Now... this is actually the best drinking game to a film I've done. It's got a small enough number of imbibe moments that one can usually remember them, and they are all for just one drink so there's no confusion about how many sips or chugs this or that requires. Here are the moments: Shan-Yu's hawk screeches (repeat the screech and drink) Characters pour or have tea (drink) Nudity (drink) Ancestor spirits on screen (drink) End of the Tung S...

Pop Culture Conjure: Michael Jackson's Magic Murder, Ghosty Biopics and Mama Odie

Michael Jackson Murdered by Voodoo! (EDIT 2023: dead link) Or Candomblé , rather. This story isn't exactly new but some haven't heard it yet. Admittedly, it may be with good reason -- only about half of this lady's story sounds plausible, if that. A lot of it sounds like she's either trying to get attention for her business or trying to get attention for selling her Jackson memorabilia, or trying to get attention for both. It sounds like he may have really been a client of hers; but the claim that he promised the elephant man skeleton to her sounds like total crap given it's well known by most people -- including Jackson himself one should hope -- that he was never in possession of the thing. (Joseph Merrick's skeleton has been at the Royal London College of Medicine Museum ever since the fleshy part died more than a century ago. Museums usually don't sell off their collections.) The report of how she did it is an interesting one, worth examining: ...
