Life of a Modern Hoodoo; a Tale a la Raymond Chandler

It was another day in the life of the online hoodoo spell lady. She sat before her computer, staring at the screen, her inbox beckoning her. She knew the drill - the first task of the day was always to check her emails. A couple of spell inquiries were waiting, each vying for her attention.  The first inquiry, however, made her heart sink. She knew it was the worst kind - the kind that demanded reassurance. The kind that would make her promise the impossible. She had warned people about this, but it seemed like nobody paid any attention. It was a woman this time, seeking a spell to make a man give her more of his time, sex, and conversation. The catch? She wanted to know if it was going to work.  The online hoodoo spell lady sighed. She knew that success was a tricky thing, especially when it came to people wanting "more" of something. She crafted an honest response, but deep down, she knew that it would only discourage or confuse the woman further. Nevertheless, she hit the ...

The Mulan Drinking Game

Okay... so a drinking game to a Disney movie is arguably not very Goth. Let's just point out that Disney hosts Bats Day and that you can drink this while sipping some suitably spooky beverage. Mulan is one of the final movies of the Disney Renaissance . It is based on an old Chinese poem about a woman who went into the military in place of her old father and little brothers. The movie is of course Disnified and has weird elements like a talking dragon voice by Eddie Murphy thrown in to be more 'hip.' Now... this is actually the best drinking game to a film I've done. It's got a small enough number of imbibe moments that one can usually remember them, and they are all for just one drink so there's no confusion about how many sips or chugs this or that requires. Here are the moments: Shan-Yu's hawk screeches (repeat the screech and drink) Characters pour or have tea (drink) Nudity (drink) Ancestor spirits on screen (drink) End of the Tung S...

The Worst Fanfiction Ever Written

Type the phrase "worst fanfic ever" into Google, and what you get are web pages about a certain Harry Potter fic entitled My Immortal . The story is so bad that there is disagreement as to whether or not it was written as a joke or a trollfic -- on the one hand, the author (Tara Gilesbie) makes a few references within the text that suggest her to have a better education than her supposed writing style would generally mark. But others say they know the author from various online forums where she has posted items of similar tone and spelling, meaning at the least, if she's a troll she's a very devoted one. The story has a tendency to be deleted from any site where it's made available, presumably due to the sharp drop it brings in user IQ. Here is one that survives as of this writing. The story tells the tale of a goth vampire student coming to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft, where Harry and Draco have also inexplicably transformed into goth vampires, and bo...

Problems Only Goths Understand (And Why Our Shoes Are Always to Blame)

Trying to get blacks that match after they fade in the wash. Trying to convince the drunk frat boy who is hitting on you that you really are a guy. Big hair, small cars. Airport metal detectors. Nicknames such as "that gay devil worshiping freak that dyed his hair purple". Getting your jewelry tangled in your clothes/hair. When your pointy toe shoes/boots get caught in the holes in the hem of your skirt. Wearing a black turtleneck when it's 90 degrees outside. Accidentally removing someone's nose ring with your spiked bracelet while dancing. Getting people to look you in the eyes when you talk to them. Getting your slave bracelet caught in your fishnets. People declaring that your eyes are yellow, when, in fact, they are green. Having to reach for the salt with one hand while holding back your sleeve with the other so it doesn't drag in the gravy. Trying to find your possessions in an all black room. Trying to get the hair-dye stains ou...
